The Lone Star Youth Orchestra

It’s not too late to join LSYO!

We still have openings for viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, French horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba players.

Read below for information about how to audition.

Youth Orchestra Auditions

Thank you for your interest in the Lone Star Youth Orchestra (LSYO).
Membership, by audition, in the LSYO is open to all middle school and high school string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players.  Note, however, that only 12th grade students who have been previous LSYO members will be permitted to participate for their senior year.  No incoming seniors new to LSYO will be admitted.
All auditions are scheduled on a first come, first served basis.  Please begin by reading the audition requirements and steps below.  Additional questions? Contact the LSYO Manager via phone at (972) 252-4800 or via e-mail at

School Music Program Participation

LSYO is intended to support, not interfere with, local school music programs. Our goal is to provide students with additional opportunities for musical enhancement. Therefore, in order to be eligible for LSYO, students must participate in their school music program(s) [if such programs are offered].

If a student does not participate in an available school music program, then the only way that student may be admitted to LSYO is to obtain a formal letter from the school’s band or orchestra director stating that the school is aware of, and waives, such a requirement. This letter must be submitted to the LSYO Manager before the student shall be permitted to schedule an audition.

      1. Check must be made payable to LAS COLINAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

  3. When all registration materials are received, the LSYO Manager will contact you to schedule the audition.
    1. Auditions are scheduled so that players from a given instrument family are all slotted within a common time period.  So, for each of the two Saturday audition dates in August, ten minute slots will be assigned within the following categories:

      Early Group: Strings
      Mid-Day Group: Winds
      Late-Day Group: Brass

    2. Auditions are provided by appointment only.  No walk up auditions will be accepted.
  4. Prepare the following:
    1. Music excerpts provided.  Play only within the brackets on each piece.  Music does not need to be memorized.
    2. Scales (specific to this instrument):
    3. One solo piece of your choice (2-3 minutes in length; does not need to be memorized).
    4. Sight reading may be provided at audition.
  5. Attend your audition. NOTE: Because the Irving Arts Center will be closed this summer for roof and HVAC replacement, August auditions will be held at a different location than usual.
    1. Auditions will be held at:
4500 Fuller Drive (first floor, use main entrance)
      Irving, TX 75038
    2. Arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to your designated audition time.

NOTE: Because the large percussion instruments are only available at the Irving Arts Center, we will have to delay all PERCUSSION auditions until WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th.
